Think of both 15% and 25% in units of 5%: 15% is 3 groups of 5%, and 25% is 5 groups of 5%.

Show the answer and step-by-step explanation

Answer: Rent 750 $

  1. Read the chart — The pie chart tells us the percentage of the total expenses for each part. We know Transport 15% = $450, and we need Rent 25%.
  2. Use 5% units — Both 15% and 25% can be made from 5% units. Divide 100% into 20 equal units, so each unit is 5%.
  3. Transport is 3 units — Transport is 15%, which is 3 groups of 5%. So these 3 units are worth $450 altogether.
  4. Find 1 unit — 3 units are $450. So 1 unit is $450 ÷ 3 = $150.
  5. Rent is 5 units — Rent is 25%, which is 5 groups of 5%. So rent is 5 × $150 = $750.
  6. Check — Check: 1 unit is 5%, so 20 units are 100%. The total expenses are 20 × $150 = $3000; 25% rent is $750, which makes sense. 📌 Key idea: change the known percentage and the required percentage into the same small units, find the amount for 1 unit, then find the required part.

Method: In a pie chart, each percentage is a part of the total. When one part's amount is known, first find the amount for one equal percentage unit, then multiply by the number of units in the required part.

  1. In the pie chart of Ali's family's monthly expenses, Food is 28%, Rent is 24%, Savings is 20%, Utilities is 16%, and Transport is 12%. If the utilities cost $384, how much do they spend on rent each month?
    Answer

    576 $ — Utilities 16% = $384. Since 16% = 2 groups of 8%, 1 group of 8% = $384 ÷ 2 = $192. Rent 24% = 3 groups of 8%. Rent = 3 × $192 = $576.

  2. In the pie chart of Raju's family's monthly expenses, Food is 35%, Rent is 30%, Savings is 15%, Transport is 10%, and Utilities is 10%. If their savings are $420, how much do they spend on food each month?
    Answer

    980 $ — Savings 15% = $420. Since 15% = 3 groups of 5%, 1 group of 5% = $420 ÷ 3 = $140. Food 35% = 7 groups of 5%. Food expenses = 7 × $140 = $980.

  3. In the pie chart of Mei Ling's family's monthly expenses, Food is 32%, Rent is 28%, Others is 15%, Transport is 14%, and Utilities is 11%. If the food expenses are $960, how much more do they spend on rent than on transport?
    Answer

    420 $ — The percentage by which rent is more than transport is 28% − 14% = 14%. Food 32% = $960. Since 32% = 16 groups of 2%, 1 group of 2% = $960 ÷ 16 = $60. 14% = 7 groups of 2%, so the extra amount is 7 × $60 = $420.
